Revelation 3:14 - The Beginning of God's Creation
The proper understanding of Revelation 3:14 has been a matter of confusion to many. With a reading of the King James Version, Christ is presented as the first creation, calling him “the beginning of the creation of God.” This understanding, though explicit in the text, has been fiercely opposed by those rejecting the notion of a created Messiah...

Messianic Names - Isaiah 9:6 and Matthew 1:23
Both the Trinitarian and Modalist alike have turned to Isaiah 9:6 as a proof text for the doctrines that they respectively represent. While the Trinitarian will focus upon the words “Mighty God," the Modalist will appeal to the words "Eternal Father" for support of their doctrine...

On the Translation of Romans 9:5
The following article has been produced by Abbot on the subject of Romans 9:5.  The question presented by this text is whether or not Jesus Christ is identified as God.   Originally published in The Journal of the Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis, this essay discusses...

Is Jesus Christ the Source of Creation?
Scripture teaches that God is the creator of all things, serving as its source. (Rev. 4:11; Rom. 11:36) That God is called creator is well established throughout Scripture, but what do we make of the references made to Jesus’ role in creation?

  Acts 20:28 - Whose Blood?
The text of Acts 20:28 has caused some confusion, with theological difficulties found in this verse when certain translations are considered.  As an example, the NASB speaks of God’s blood being that which purchased the congregation.  When such a rendering is given the implication is that Jesus is God....

  Jesus Christ - Wisdom Personified
The identification of Jesus with the personified Wisdom of Proverbs 8 extends well back into the early church.  It was accepted by Trinitarian and non-Trinitarian alike.  The acceptance of this fact even pre-dates the general acceptance of Trinitarian dogma...

  John 12:38-41 - Who's Glory?
Trinitarians are always looking for evidence to support their theology.  They are continually searching for texts that they believe will stump those that deny their doctrine, for they incorrectly view the doctrine as Biblical.  Some of their own proof texts are unknown by the vast majority...

John 20:28 - My Lord and My God!
This text has often been cited as a proof text for Trinitarians. Those upholding the doctrine have been found to take issue with applying the term “god” to one other than the true God of Scripture, and so they have erroneously argued that if Jesus is ever identified as “god” he must be...

The First and the Last - God, Jesus or Both?
Undoubtedly the title "the Alpha and the Omega" is one belonging to God.  This point would be disputed by few.  Further, God is identified as "the First and the Last."  What about Jesus though?  He too is also assigned this title, but does this equate him with God?

Revelation 5:13 - The Worship Due to Christ
That Jesus Christ should be worshipped is a matter not to be disputed.  Indeed, one of the Greek words for worship, προσκυνεω, is repeatedly assigned to Christ.  Yet this word carries with it a wide range of meanings, including to “worship, do obeisance to..."

I and the Father are One - John 10:24-39
John 10:30 has long been one of the foundation texts for those arguing for Trinitarianism or Modalism.  This passage has been presented by Trinitarians to show that Jesus and the Father are one in essence, while Modalists have used it to argue for both one essence and one person...

Colossians 2:9 - The Fullness of Deity in Christ
Chances are that if a discussion of Christ’s nature takes place, Colossians 2:9 will come into the picture.  Often used in demonstrating that Christ has two natures, it is argued that he is 100% God and 100% man, not a mixture of 2 natures as Hercules was in Greek mythology, but a single person possessing both natures in their completeness...

"I Am" and Jesus Christ
Of the collection of Trinitarian arguments that are made, the most common stem from a vain of reasoning where something is shared between God and Christ. Be it an activity, a name or a title, if there is something that is the same or similar is applied to them both it becomes “evidence” that Jesus is God. This line of reasoning has brought about a connection between two very simply words. They are everyday words in both the Bible languages and the languages of today. These words are “I am”...

John 1:1 - And the Word was?
“In the beginning was the Word.” Five simple Greek words and the apostle John began the prologue to his Gospel. We can reasonably speculate that he never anticipated the amount controversy that surrounds these words today, yet the first verse of his Gospel has arguably proven to be the most disputed passage in recent history...

Who is the Great God? - Titus 2:13 & 2 Peter 1:1
The fact that Jesus is called “God” in scripture is often called upon as a proof for both Trinitarianism and Modalism. While Modalists do believe that Jesus is God, Trinitarians, despite what they may claim, do not. What do we mean by that? A Trinitarian will certainly object that the core of what they teach is that Jesus is God, and while they say that, they do not really mean that. Trinitarians believe that God is Triune and that Jesus is but one person of that Triune God. Therefore, to call Jesus “God” does nothing to articulate the doctrine of the Trinity, for God is not Jesus, but the Trinity....
